Iodine is a component in thyroid hormones, which help regulate metabolism, growth, and function of key organs. Vegans may not get enough iodine and may be at risk of deficiency and possibly even a goiter. In addition, foods such as soybeans, cruciferous vegetables, and sweet potatoes may promote a goiter. However, just 1/4 teaspoon of iodized salt a day provides a significant amount of iodine.Getting started

I've had plenty of clients who believed it was okay to eat unlimited amounts of plant-based treats (think coconut milk ice cream and sweet potato chips). Plant-based frozen foods, desserts, and snacks can not only be high in calories, but they're often made with refined flour and added sugar, and stripped of nutrients and fiber. While they're fine as occasional treats, when consumed daily, they can pack on pounds. One study found that processed foods may decrease post-meal calorie burning by nearly 50% compared to whole foods. Trade processed plant foods for fresh snacks. Reach for in-season fruit and dark chocolate to satisfy a sweet craving; and raw veggies with hummus or guacamole for a savory fix.

Sure, there will always be people who can’t tolerate certain foods. Most of us, however, don’t have a problem with the lectins in legumes, the gluten in grains, and the sugar in a reasonable amount of fruit. Cutting those healthy foods out of your diet because someone has scared you into not eating them is unnecessary and unfortunate. The more full-of-whole-foods your diet is, the healthier it is, and the easier it is to maintain. Plus, physical health is one thing, but how about your emotional health? What’s a restrictive diet costing you emotionally? Is it preventing you from living the parts of your life that you enjoy, such as spending meals with friends and family? Is it causing you anxiety and guilt about food and eating? This is also relevant to health and wellness, so if you’re following an eating plan you feel is costing you big emotionally, it’s time to step back.

If you follow these rules most of the time but occasionally crave a fast food fix, a slice of pizza or a brownie, go for it. Enjoying your food isn't an exception to a healthy eating plan—it's an integral part. "We all have to relax a bit," Drewnowski says. "If you want fried chicken now and then, enjoy it!"

"Staying well-hydrated helps your body function properly, and it also helps make sure you don’t overeat," Pam Bede, M.S., R.D. with Abbott’s EAS Sports Nutrition, tells SELF. But it's not just that staying hydrated keeps you from overeating. According to Maxine Yeung, M.S., R.D., owner of The Wellness Whisk, sometimes you may feel hungry when, in fact, you're actually thirsty. Basically, no harm can come from drinking a glass of water.

Eat like a tourist in Greece. The sunset over your office park isn't as stunning as the one over an Aegean beach, but a plate of grilled fish and fresh vegetables and a glass of wine is as delicious in Athens, Georgia, as it is in Athens, Greece. All the heart-healthy fats, minerals, and antioxidants in Mediterranean foods like hummus, olive oil, and feta can help lower your risk for heart disease, says Susan Mitchell, Ph.D., co-author of Fat Is Not Your Fate (Fireside).

Alcohol is high in calories, so if you do drink and you’re trying to lose weight, think about cutting back. Try to keep to a maximum of 14 units a week. But spread it out to avoid binge drinking, and go several days a week without alcohol.
